Objectives To clarify dissertation procedures. To inform you of the new final year structure. To clarify procedures for selecting options. To outline the key next steps for you. To prepare you for what will happen when you arrive back.

1. Dissertation Procedures Dr Adam McNamara (Psychology Dissertation Coordinator) APS3 => for GBR route, you are required to do a Psychology dissertation Dan Mcarthy (Sociology)

Single Honours - 120 credits Currently Dissertation (40 credits) Compulsory Module (10 credits) 7 options (70 credits) 2011-2012 Dissertation (45 credits), Compulsory Module (15 credits), 4 option modules (60 credits)

Joint Honours (APS) Compulsory modules (75 credits) Dissertation – 45 credits (could be psych one or soc one) Compulsory Psychology modules – 2x15 credits Optional modules (45 credits) 1 X 15 credit Psychology module and 2 X 15 credit Sociology module OR 2X15 credit Psychology modules and 1x15 Sociology credits

Year Structure - Single Honours Semester 1 (15 weeks): Sep2011/Jan2012 1 compulsory module - 2 optional modules Begin dissertation January exams Semester 2 (15 weeks): Feb2012-June2012 2 optional modules Complete dissertation (deadline TBC) May/June exams

3. Procedures for selecting options APS students email to let us know preferred ratio of sociology/psychology options* Email to all students with two attachments: *module descriptions *module options form (Psych/APS) by 11 th April 2011 (potential for career paths) Return the form – by 11 th May Allocations by end of June 2011 * Vicky Alexander will explain

4. Next Steps Reflect on your experience. Make contact with your visiting tutors for your second and final visit. Work on your placement report. Explore staff research interests on departmental web-pages. Clarify broad areas of interest. Read and respond to your University emails. Put key deadlines in your diary.

5. What happens when you arrive back…. Welcome back session – Director of Studies, Dissertation Coordinator and Final Year Tutor Welcome back ‘packs’. Sign for handbooks. Hand in your placement reports. Meet with your personal tutor. Placement debrief session. October 14 th Careers Fair
