2 National Science Foundation Science of Learning Centers (SLC) SLC Focus Areas For Discussion: June 20, 2003

3 The Theme The focus of today’s discussion be 'limited' to homing in on coming up with the fundamental issue - the theme - as an example - 'engaging the disinterested student'. Specifically, coming up with the sort of an issue that merits being studied for the next 10-20 years. First and foremost research - not outreach - based theme. A theme clearly grounded in science and effective teaching. Arnold Palmer

4 Research Focus The research focus must be: -- fundamental or basic research (as apposed to applied in the classroom or schools, although some "testing" of the results of the research will be necessary, as will dissemination of the research findings). This project is at least 75-80% research; 25-20% outreach and dissemination. -- large enough question/topic to consume at least 10 years of work by a large group of researchers -- address the need for more people to learn in the fields of SMET (but the project may focus just on one field). Margie Zack

5 NSF funding for education related initiatives in Rochester I have looked at all education-related NSF funded programs, funded since 1/1/98 in Rochester (note: the search included all Rochester, NY in the criteria, and thus includes all Rochester-based institutions). In your handouts you will find several pdf files with the results of this search (note: there is one pdf file for each funding initiative). Frank Wolfs
