2 SIPBS - BSc (Hons) & MSci degrees Dr Charles Kennedy - academic selector Course background Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) (4 years) A broad-based degree that covers all four core subjects, plus appropriate clinical aspects and develops understanding of all aspects of biomedical sciences Particularly relevant for jobs in NHS and private sector laboratories 4 MSci degrees (5 years) For students interested in specialising in a single core subject option at Master’s level. Follow one of the joint honours degree streams in years 1-4 & specialise in year 5 Biochemistry Immunology Microbiology Pharmacology

3 SIPBS - BSc (Hons) & MSci degrees Dr Charles Kennedy - academic selector Course structure Years 1 & 2 Students on all 10 degrees attend exactly the same classes in first two years + two elective subjects from departments across the University in year 1 Develop broad understanding of appropriate & relevant background knowledge. including biology of organisms, human physiology, infection & immunity, nutritional biochemistry, molecular bioscience Designed for flexibility of student choice End of year 2 Joint honours students: decide which of the 5 degree streams to follow (total flexibility) (NB.  no need to choose >1 joint honours degree in UCAS application) Biomedical science students: decide to continue to year 3 or transfer to a joint honours degree (NB. joint honours & MSci students cannot transfer to biomedical science MSci students: decide which of the 5 joint honours degree streams to follow in years 3-4 (NB.  no need to choose >1 MSci degree in UCAS application) (NB. joint honours & biomedical science students cannot transfer to MSci at this stage

4 SIPBS - BSc (Hons) & MSci degrees Dr Charles Kennedy - academic selector Course structure Years 3 & 4 All students specialise in chosen subject(s) End of year 4 Joint honours students: graduate with BSc (hons) or can transfer to MSci in one of the subjects of their joint honours stream if progress is good (currently 60% average in year 4) Biomedical science students: graduate with BSc (hons) or can transfer to MSci in one of biochemistry, immunology, microbiology if progress is good (currently 60% average in year 4) MSci students: continue to year 5 of MSci in one of the subjects of their joint honours stream or graduate with BSc (hons) in appropriate joint honours degree Year 5 MSci students: specialise in one of the subjects of their joint honours stream

9 SIPBS - BSc (Hons) & MSci degrees Dr Charles Kennedy - academic selector Entry requirements - general information Highers etc can be obtained over more than 1 sitting An Advanced Higher is given a greater credit than the Higher and an Advanced Higher at grade B, is counted as a grade A Higher in that subject towards the overall required grades Both Higher and Advanced Higher results in a single subject will be counted, but preference will be given to applicants with qualifications in a range of subjects. There is a high level of competition for places, so successful applications normally have qualifications in the most appropriate subjects - chemistry, (human) biology, physics, maths, English Preference also given to other subjects with relevant transferable skills, such as geography, history, modern studies, but all subjects will be taken into consideration Limited number of places on MSci degrees, so if applicant doesn’t already have 2 A’s in appropriate subjects, advised to apply for joint honours degree. Option to transfer to Msci after year 4.

10 SIPBS - BSc (Hons) & MSci degrees Dr Charles Kennedy - academic selector Grades are the main factor considered when reviewing applications, but: Personal statement Should show a clear interest in science and biology-related degrees Not an issue if written with medicine, dentistry or pharmacy as main interest Teacher’s reference Should contain a realistic prediction of future grades When appropriate, discuss extenuating circumstances for previous underperformance
