Cell Theory 1800s, Scientists discover that plants and animals have cells and are created by preexisting cells. Principles: All living organisms are composed of one or more cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure and organization of all living organisms. Cells arise only from previously existing cells, with cells passing copies of their genetic material on to their daughter cells.

Basic Cell Types ALL cells have a plasma membrane Two categories of cells: Prokaryotic (pro kar ee AW tik) Eukaryotic (yew kar ee Aw tik) Eukaryotic Characteristics contain organelles and a nucleus Prokaryotic Characteristics cells without a nucleus and/or organelles
