Analysis Goal of the Discover Tool Local Databases Remote Databases Web Scale Discovery
3
Local Databases Complete control of data and user interface. Relatively complete understanding of the metadata. Can account for local nuances. Relatively fast. Limited amount of objects and metadata
4
Remote Databases (Most journal articles are found using this method.) Remotely indexed data Several different databases used for searching Native interfaces for searching Don’t own the metadata
5
Federated Searching (Searching multiple database at one time through a single interface) Complicated, cumbersome and slow. Data isn't normalized. Relevancy ranking isn't done the same way. Merging results is complicated.
6
Web Scale Discovery (Various individual sets of metadata loaded to one central database.) What is it Usually provided as service Data all in one place Relatively quick Contains local metadata from other participants
7
Action Items Investigate Web Scale Discovery products Investigate loading more data into the Discovery Tool Investigate solutions for improving Federated searching Continue to interact with campus to get feedback
