Offering your Windows Server Class Online. Tony Basilico Community College of Rhode Island abasilico@ccri.edu

The fastest growing segment in higher education is online classes. With both virtualization software and web based labs an opportunity exists to offer your Windows Server class online in addition to a physical class.

Online Classes  The concepts discussed can also be applied to other Operating System Courses such as Linux.

OnLine Class  Virtual Machines  Web Based Labs  Online Platform  Online resources and tools

Online Classes  Ideal for Community College Students o Work o At home parent o Transportation  Growth o 20% per year o 2000 online seats at CCRI

Online Class  Windows Server Online Class o First class to fill o Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer o Takes time to set it up

Online Student  Very dedicated  Focused  Submitting assignments at all hours of the day and night

Present Physical Class  Computer lab o All students connected into a server o Network and server maintenance o Difficult for an online class

Windows Server Online Challenge  Other online classes o Just download and install software  Windows Server students need to work with operating system o On home computer o Lap top o If a student does not have a computer, need to provide access at college

Task for Online Class  Have student access Server OS on their computer or on campus  Keep it simple  Cost effective

Choices  Virtual Machine  Web Based Labs

What is Virtualization  Turning a single computing platform into 2 or more virtual computing platforms  Multiple operating systems can be run from one computer

Virtual Machine  In this context, a VM is called a "guest" while the environment it runs within is called a "host.“  Stores operating system in a folder o Can delete it

Virtual Machine Advantages  Can have multiple OS on a computer  Can be downloaded on any computer  Easy to use  Many are free  Can provide mobility o Place virtual machine OS into a flash drive

Virtual Machine Advantages For Students  Install OS on their computer  Easy access  Quick loading of OS

Virtual Machine Advantages For Students  All hands-on o Install OS o Install Active Directory o Create fault tolerant disks  Become familiar with virtual machines

Major Task  Not to have students install Windows Server over their present operating system.

Virtual Machines  Great lab session by Greg Tomsho on Virtual Machines  With his session o You have all it takes to use Virtual Machines for an online class o Let’s build on his session

Virtual Machine  Three steps 1.Download software 2.Create virtual machine 3.Install operating system

OS Requirements Student Computers  Minimum Requirement for Window Server 2008 o 512 Ram o 10 gig disk recommend 15  Survey (30 students) o All student’s computers met requirements  Don’t have o Use 10+ gig thumb drive or external hard drive

Install Operating System  Copy of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise o Microsoft Alliance ELMs  120 Day Evaluation o With text book o Down load from Microsoft

Virtual Machines Not Considered  VMWorkstation  Microsoft Virtual Server  Windows Virtual PC o For Windows 7 o Replaces Virtual PC and Virtual Server

Virtual Machines Considered  VMware Player 3.1  Virtual Box  Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1

3 Virtual Machine Common Attributes  Free  Easy to download  Easy to create virtual machine  Very simple to install operating system

3 Virtual Machine Common Attributes  Can select amount of disk space to use  Can select amount of memory to use  Can install virtual machine operating system on external device

VMware Player 3.1  Register to download  Icon on desktop  Easy to create virtual machine  Very easy to install operating system

VMware Player 3.1  Download o http://www.vmware.com/products/player /faqs.html http://www.vmware.com/products/player /faqs.html o Search for VMware Player o Download latest Player 3.X

VMware Player 3.1  Installs operating system in same step  When create virtual machine o Prompts for OS  Demo VMware

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 Or Windows Virtual PC  Download from microsoft.com  In search enter Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 o Need to create virtual machine first o Then Install OS in virtual machine

Virtual Box  http://www.virtualbox.org  Oracle  Similar to Virtual PC install  Easy & quick install  For Macs  Demo Virtual Box

Virtual Machine Additions  Last step is to install virtual machine additions  Gives user complete control of mouse  Without using vm’s hot keys  Move in out of vm

My Experience  Two semesters o Started with Virtual PC 2007  Second semester moved to VMware Player  Total near 100 students o online and classroom

My Experience –One Issue  Immediately after Active Directory installed  Server and Net Logon Services not running  Very few students  Easy fix-Start services

My Choice  VMware Player 3.1 o Install VM and OS in one step o Prompts for OS o Good performance o Create fault tolerance disks o Has Snapshot o Has saved state for quick access to OS

VMware Player  Can create virtual disks for fault tolerance o Students create Mirrored and Raid 5 Volumes

Campus Computers  Specific Computers have a copy of o VmMware Player o Virtual PC 2007 SP 1  For students that have virtual machine on external drive

Windows Server Activation  ELMS Download  http://msdn02.e- academy.com/elms/Storefront/Home.aspx?campus =ccri_csip http://msdn02.e- academy.com/elms/Storefront/Home.aspx?campus =ccri_csip  Can activate 120 day Evaluation Server with serial number provided by ELMS
