Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 1 Spring Quarter 2008 Laboratory Quiz & Data Analysis and Presentation for Written and Oral Reports Week 6 Day 2

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 2 Spring Quarter 2008 Coming up on Friday Robot Performance Test Four – Teams must demonstrate functional pick-up, identification, and transportation mechanisms. –Robots must start when the CdS cell reads the LED start light. –Cross hill or chasm. –Go to and pick-up either ice core. –Robot must return to start area with the ice core. –Robot must display the color of the ice core being carried on the Handy Board LCD. Weekly Review with instructional team.

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 3 Spring Quarter 2008 Grading for Performance Test 4 ItemPoints Start w/light & Cross hill or chasm5 Go to ice core & pick up ice core (either one) 5 Return to start area with ice core5 Display ice core color on LCD5 TOTAL20

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 4 Spring Quarter 2008 Technical Inspection II on Friday, May 11th Purpose: To reconcile the Team Budget and parts as recorded in the on-line Company Store system with the parts purchased for or already on the Robot. If Store records and the parts on the robot do not match, do the reconciliation by filling out the order form from the Store. Outside parts will be evaluated by Mr. Brand, Inst. Lab Supervisor in HI 215, and then entered as a special part order. Credit for performance may not be given if all robot parts are not documented properly. Technical Inspection III will be Friday, May 25th.

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 5 Spring Quarter 2008 Considerations for Open Lab In Open Lab, the primary job of the GTAs and UTAs is safety. It is not their job to write your code or build your robot. Do not endanger yourself or your classmates by using tools in an unsafe manner. Always use proper eye protection. Please dress properly – no sandals. Open lab will be crowded – share and be flexible. Note that a team can be charged for damaging the robot course (Part No. CMAT01). Please test with care.

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 6 Spring Quarter 2008 Data Analysis and Presentation Data generally is available in tables –Tables are necessary for many types of data BUT –They can be hard to read and understand –When used, they should include Appropriate Title, Column Headings, Units Use spreadsheet or word processor Read from right or bottom of page Graphs provide easier understanding of data Your team may want to use both

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 7 Spring Quarter 2008 Data Analysis and Presentation Possible Graphs –x-y plot of a single data set, multiple data sets –Bar charts - horizontal, vertical - comparison

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 8 Spring Quarter 2008 Data Analysis and Presentation –Pie charts - Good for parts of a whole –Budgets –Time spent –Project schedule done in graphical form

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 9 Spring Quarter 2008 Data Analysis and Presentation Spreadsheet graphs are one place to start –Don’t trust them to give good graphs directly Format for Graphs –Appropriate grid –Even numbers on grid, Highest # greater than max data point, Lowest # less than min data point –Title and axis labels (labels need units) –Multiple plots need different symbols - legend –Use smooth curve when data points fit equation –Use points connected with straight lines when there is no equation that relates the independent and dependent variables

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 10 Spring Quarter 2008 Example Of Formatted Graph

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 11 Spring Quarter 2008 Data Analysis and Presentation Possible Graphs and Charts used in Final Report and Oral Report –Pie chart to show cost breakdown –Pie chart to show man-hours breakdown –x-y chart to show motor performance curve and where robot operates –x-y chart to show power/torque/forces required to pick and pick up –x-y chart to show track testing vs. project time –Design schedule Find examples in your Engineering Graphics and in your Writing as an Engineer books.
