What do we mean by indigenous people? People who inhabited a land before it was conquered by colonial societies and who consider themselves distinct from modern societies. In some cases their lifestyles have remained unchanged for several hundred years- often subsistence or hunter- gatherers 300-500 million worldwide Occupy 20% of land area Huge Diversity of peoples and cultures Machiguenga girl from Timpia

Why do they need protecting? Forced contact – sudden unplanned meeting with the 21 st century world - can disrupt their lives Outside contact can pose serious health risks Social pressures can affect longstanding traditions and practices
5
Indigenous people have rights The social, cultural, religious and spiritual values and practices of these peoples shall be recognized and protected, and due account shall be taken of the nature of the problems which face them both as groups and as individuals. (ILO convention 1999) There are 20-30 groups living in voluntary isolation in Peru In the region of the Urubamba valley They include the Nanti, Chashiari, Nahua, Machiguenga, Yine Yami and Yaminahua peoples
