If the feedback is to be effective, students must have a clear understanding of the task and the criteria, that is, what they should look for in the work (NCLRC, 2008) A learning activity, instead of a scoring or ranking activity (Sluijsmans, 2002) …providing direct and authentic evaluative experience is a necessary (instrumental) condition for the development of evaluative expertise and therefore for intelligent self-monitoring (Sadler, 1989, p.143).
