YOM KIPPUR Sabbath School Teaching

Yom Kippur  Occurs on the tenth day of the seventh month.  Occurs on 10 Tishrei  Yom Kippur means Day of Atonement

For it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul. Vayikra 17:11b

Yom Kippur  Atonement means to cover  Sin separates us from God  The High Priest acted as a “go between” person between God and man GodMan High Priest

 Yom Kippur is known as the Day of Atonement  On every day except Yom Kippur the High Priest wore special robes Yom Kippur

 On Yom Kippur the High Priest removed his special robes  He wore only a white robe Yom Kippur

 Two identical goats were used in Yom Kippur  One goat was chosen as a sacrifice to God  The other was called the scapegoat goat and was released in the wilderness

Yom Kippur  The High Priest would enter the Temple  He would go into a special room called the Holy of Holies  The Ark of the Covenant was there

 Only entered on Yom Kippur  Ark of the Covenant  Offered incense  The High Priest sprinkled blood on the top cover of the Ark of the Covenant The Holy of Holies

Yom Kippur  It is called the mercy seat  The High Priest covered or made atonement for the people’s sins  He asked God to forgive the peoples’ and his sins

 When finished the High Priest put his special robes back on.  His job for that day was complete! Yom Kippur

Yeshua and Yom Kippur  Yeshua removed his robes of glory just like the High Priest.  He became a person just like you and me.  Yet he was fully God and fully man!

Yeshua and Yom Kippur  Yeshua made atonement with his blood  His blood was better than animal’s blood  It removed, not covered our sin!

 The High Priest put back on his special clothes.  When Yeshua finished making atonement for our sins, he put back on his robes of glory and beauty!  In all of this he still remained God! Yeshua and Yom Kippur

Modern Yom Kippur  Time of Fasting  Special worship service called Kol Nidre

Yom Kippur – Kol Nidre  Kol Nidre is the evening service that starts Yom Kippur.  Kol Nidre means “all vows”  A time when we ask God to annul all personal vows.

Yom Kippur  Prayer Time  For Israel  For others who have committed sins against the Jewish people and Israel  Time to ask forgiveness from one another  Time to give forgiveness

Yom Kippur  Yom Kippur helps to remind us that the people in our lives are very important.  So, Yom Kippur is about good relationships.  It is about how we get along with both God and others.

Yom Kippur  If we have a bad relationship with someone or with God we need to get it right.  This was important to Yeshua.  Yeshua taught we need to have the right attitude and right actions in Yom Kippur.

Right Attitude - Humility Luke 18:10-14 9 And He (Yeshua) also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Right Action – Seeking Forgiveness Mattityahu 5:23, 24 So if you are offering your gift at the Temple altar and you remember there that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift where it is by the altar, and go, make peace with your brother. Then come back and offer your gift.
