Accessibility Issues There are so many different videos that you might be confused – LD Often inaccessible to people who are Deaf Color contrasts difficult for LD & VI Audio can be unclear Often lack description of the video for the blind and visually impaired

Best Formats for YouTube Video Formats MP4 WMV MOV MPG AVI Duration: No longer than 15 minutes No larger than 2 GB size.

Getting Ready You have to make a video You need a transcription of the spoken content of the video There’s no way to add video descriptions, therefore the Narrator should describe important actions thus incorporating it into the video DO NOT include quiet pauses in the audio

Uploading a Video to YouTube Create an account Sign In

Select the Video Click on the upload Button Search for it on your hard drive Click on the “Upload Now” button Autoshare options (Facebook, Twitter, Reader, etc.)

Uploaded Video There will be thumbnails of your videos including titles You’ll have the opportunity to edit

YouTube Captioning Options Upload transcript by selecting file from your hard drive Make sure you choose transcript file (English only) It must be a.txt file

Fixing Transcription Errors #1 Go to the videos tag, subtitles and download It will be named caption.sbv

Fixing Transcription Errors #2 After downloading the file it will be an.sbv Open it with notepad Copy it into Microsoft word to format it if needed

YouTube Captioning Options Upload captions already with the time codes Upload the transcript as an.txt file (English only)

Additional Points on Captioning #1 The video and the captions are separate files that are synchronized in the site Resize the captions font The videos can transcribed in different languages As they are closed captions, they can be turned on or off

Additional Points on Captioning #2 Mobile Technology - video will often only display open captions There are many authoring tools available for adding captions before uploading to YouTube The transcript can only be downloaded by the video owner

Summary YouTube videos can be inserted or embedded into other Web pages Content must be understandable visually and audibly Text in captioned videos can be found by search engines All YouTube videos should be captioned – they aren’t but in the future…….. YouTube & Google provides a way to bridge the information divide, it’s not perfect but…….
