The Good Reasons for Doing an IBHE Program Review To comply with the Illinois statute requiring the IBHE to "review periodically all existing programs of instruction... at state universities and to advise the appropriate board of control if the contribution of each program is not educationally and economically justified.” To improve the quality and productivity of individual academic programs and units of research and public service.

The Real Reasons for Doing an IBHE Program Review To provide direction for future planning and budgeting. To engage stakeholders in an objective analysis of programs/programming that will prepare them for the next decade. To acknowledge and publicize exemplary work and programs of distinction.

Review Format: IBHE Issues Analysis of any major external changes that have affected or have the potential to affect the program--e.g., changes in the discipline or field, societal need, accreditation standards, etc. Analysis of major findings and recommendations, including evidence of learning outcomes (ASSESSMENT) and identification of opportunities for program improvement.

Review Format: IBHE Issues, cont. Analysis of any major internal program changes--e.g., changes in student demand, costs, resources, staffing, facilities, curriculum, etc. Description of significant actions taken since the last review. Description of actions taken (or that will be taken) as a result of the review.

Review Format: Institutional Issues Responses to specifically identified concerns in such areas as recruitment practices, support of graduate research mission, job placement, student and employer satisfaction, assessment, curriculum, etc. Description of program achievements and best practices.

Five Commandments of Program Review Involve as many stakeholders as possible in the review process. Ensure that the review will have an impact beyond the report itself.

Five Commandments, cont. Complete the first draft by January 31; complete the final draft no later than June 1. Submit no more than 3 single-spaced pages (font size 12) for your final review. Present your summary of the program review to CGS.
