October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs1 LST Mechanical Design Review Mechanical Installation Preparation H. James Krebs October 21, 2003

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs2 Mechanical Installation Preparation IR-12 will be the location of most mechanical preparation work during 2004 & 2005 Why IR-12? –IR-12 Hall is very similar to IR-2 Hall Same floor plan Identical 50/10 ton crane combination –We need space IR-12 is empty IR-2 is presently occupied with BaBar related items –Present status 3 technical support staff now housed at IR-12 Engineering offices are under construction –Estimated completion November 1 –Jim Krebs & Zohrab Vassilian move to IR-12 immediately after completion of this review

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs3 IR-2

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs4 IR-12

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs5 IR-12 Activities Pre-installation preparation of brass plates –Radius corners –Drill & tap threaded holes for slide screws and swivel shackles –Adjust camber if necessary –Stage plates for assembly BaBar model –Build a fairly crude but full scale mock-up of the forward end of BaBar including: Barrel assembly simulating corner blocks removed FWD end doors FWD PEP pier FWD PEP beam line

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs13 IR-12 Activities Purpose of Model –Construct elevator platform Test function Check for interferences with end doors, beamline and PEP pier Load test Modify as necessary for corrections or improvements –Brass installation preparation Test installation hardware Load test Practice brass plate installation Brass push/pull test (see talk by Allen Constable) –LST detector installation preparation Test installation hardware Practice LST detector installation –A full Z length (3750mm) gap model exists for this

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs14 Full Z Length (Layer 17) Gap Model

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs15 Full Z Length (3750mm) Gap Model

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs16 IR-12 Activities Steel handling fixtures –Train technical support staff –Check centers of gravity –Determine appropriate rigging –Load test –Function test, if possible –Modify as needed

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs17 Test of End Plug Fixture

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs18 Test of End Plug Fixture (Cont’d)

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs19 Test of End Plug Fixture (Cont’d)

October 22, 2003H.J. Krebs20 Conclusions and Comments The full scale model will be a valuable tool for installation preparation –Earthquake bracing must be designed for this model –EQ committee approval approximately mid November –Construction of model shall commence end of November All support personnel will be trained using actual hardware Hardware will be tested to assure fit function and safe operation Brass absorber will be prepared and staged for installation
