5 Atonal Music Listen to this first piece of traditional ‘classical’ piece of music – take note of the instruments, types of chords, elements of music used. Now listen to this second piece of music – what’s different from the 1 st piece?  Try and list all the main features of the music

6 Atonal Music and Serialism The break up of tonal music – Music without a key!  Complex Rhythms  Changing time signatures  No home key/tonal centre  Chromatic  Huge leaps  Dissonances  Instruments playing in extreme ranges Schoenburg Serialism – a new way of organising the break up of tonality (we go into detail later) Schoenburg/Webern

8 Minimalism? Listen to the next piece of music – again try and list all the features of the music. How is it different?
