2
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 2 From Elba Dainton Committee has delivered his Report in Short Version. Positive outcome: –No objection on the physics program and motivations for high lumi (>10 36 and 75 ab -1 in 5 years) –Polarization an important tool –Very encouraging the positive results from Dafne tests in Frascati. –No showstopper identified GO AHEAD!

SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 3 MiniMac in place A Machine advisory committee has been set up by R. Petronzio. J. Dorfan Chair First meeting in Frascati July 16 and 17,2008. VERY POSITIVE OUTCOME. I am authorized to make public the closout transparencies of Jonathan

SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 4 Mini-MAC Committee Klaus Balewski (DESY) John Corlett (LBNL) Jonathan Dorfan (SLAC, Chair) Tom Himel (SLAC/on sabbatical at DESY) Claudio Pellegrini (UCLA) Daniel Schulte (CERN) Ferdi Willeke (BNL, by phone) Andy Wolski (Liverpool) Frank Zimmermann (CERN) (Stuart Henderson was unable to attend)
5
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 5 Mini-MAC Charge (a)to perform an initial assessment of the current design to review its viability to achieve the design operating parameters. This initial assessment would provide clear guidance regarding perceived weaknesses in the design and would further identify those areas in need of more detailed design work and focused R&D. The goal would be to complete this initial review within the next three months (As of June 2008). (b)to provide initial guidance on potential site-specific issues for Super B at the Tor Vergata site. (c)to provide ongoing, periodic assessments of the design as it matures over the subsequent nine months.
6
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 6 NEEDS for Asymmetric machine (7Gev (e-) + 4 GeV (e+)). SuperB with peak luminosity of 10 36 s -2 cm -2, integrating 75 ab-1 in 5 years. Background not exceeding too much the present Babar, thanks to low current, crossing angle and a careful design of the Interaction Region. One beam 80% polarized (High Energy). Possibility of running asymmetric at Charm threshold. (Priorities for design: Taken from Marcello Giorgi’s Talk to Mini-MAC)
7
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 7 Very exciting project -- Committee is exhilarated by the challenge Physics requirement of 10**36 cm -2 sec -1 or 75 ab -1 /5yr is very demanding –Requirement of polarization potentially adds complexity Imaginative and ambitious design -- Committee endorses the design approach. Design offers flexibility to either raise the luminosity or compensate for surprises Excellent work by a relatively small group, many of whom have full-time “day jobs” Seeman’s summary – “areas for further concentration”: Committee agrees these cover most of the essential tasks needed before the design can be fully vetted at the performance requirements General Comments J.D. Closeout report
8
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 8 Committee considers the SINGLE MOST ESSENTIAL ingredient for moving forward is the formation of a sanctioned management structure which formally incorporates a dedicated machine design team. The team members must have the strong support of their home institutions to work on the design. The team needs a designated leader, who is as close to full time as is possible The project is in need of a formal baseline which is managed with change control tools. This cannot be accomplished successfully without the management structure Recommendations J.D. Closeout report
9
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 9 The Committee sees no glaring showstoppers with respect to achieving the design performance. However, in several key areas, more work is needed before the design can be blessed The Committee, in consultation with the SuperB team, established a list of topics that are essential for the team to address before the Mini-MAC will be in a position to state with confidence that the machine can achieve its physics goals. It is the Committee’s opinion that these items can be prioritized in such a way that the machine feasibility can be judged six months from now (This assumes that the management structure is formed by late September and that more resources are provided) Nest Steps for Near-term Work J.D. Closeout report
10
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 10 Nest Steps for Near-term Work (cont.) The Committee focussed on the near-term tasks. The list that follows is by no means the totality of work needed for a TDR J.D. Closeout report

Increased statistics is not an advantage running at threshold: cross-section 3x wrt 10GeV but luminosity 10x smaller. SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 44 Topics Requiring further Study to Establish design-performance feasibility (cont) –IR design (key issues are achieving low betas, stabilization) Begin first engineering design considerations to be sure there are no impediments to achieving very low beta and/or the stability needed for collision of tiny beam spots –Injection does not pose the most challenging of SuperB design problems. However, the Committee was not presented with a clear set of design choices. A baseline configuration should be picked which is (a) capable of ensuring small enough charge fluctuations per bunch and (b) which can be be matched to the ring acceptance(s) –Continue making good progress on background simulations J.D. Closeout report
45
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 45 Additional Feedback from Mini-MAC RF –The RF and feedbacks require performance much like PEP- II. However the ring impedances must be halved relative to PEP-II. This requires careful study, and constant attention to the details of the vacuum chamber design. The SuperB team must establish an impedance budget and a conscientious impedance-budget manager –Determine the fundamental performance requirements of the coupled-bunch feedback systems. Build what is needed and make it robust, with special attention to protection against noise sources
46
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 46 Additional Feedback from Mini-MAC (cont ) Cloud and Ions –Will require further beam dynamics studies with ECI for e+ and ions for e-. The SuperB teams should take full advantage of the simulation and experimental work at CERN and CESR Polarization –Decide on the the gun and injector baseline choices –The Committee endorses inclusion of Polarization in the baseline design for the SuperB machine. However, the particle physicists should continue to study the relative importance of the physics gains from polarization, because it could turn out that the inclusion of polarization presents reductions in the peak and/or integral luminosity. The inclusion of polarization is not inexpensive and polarization could become a target if there are ultimately affordability problems
47
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 47 Additional Feedback from Mini-MAC (cont.) Tor Vergata Site –Given the current footprint of the machine, the facility fits comfortably on the site along with SPARX. However there is no room for a major expansion –Details of integration with the SPARX project will need to be carefully developed to avoid compromising the performance capabilities of either facility –Plus: The site is close to major infrastructure, namely LNF and the University –Plus: Its near two major airports. Local food is excellent –The site is crossed by a road: this may be a conflict
48
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 48 Committee Report/Next Meeting The Mini-MAC will provide a written report. The goal is to have this completed by the end of August 2008 The next meeting is anticipated in early 2009
49
SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 49 Topics Requiring Further Study to Establish design-performance feasibility (Not all topics need to be studied with equal depth. Judgment is left up to the SuperB team) –Beam-beam further experimental tests of crab waist at DAFNE (to achieve design goals, or understand limitations) –exploit the DAFNE experiment to benchmark and validate the simulation –demonstrate that the crab waist improves the performance perform strong-strong simulations for SuperB with large Piwinski angle Evaluate the effect of tolerances and component errors –Low emittance generation, tuning, dynamic aperture need simulations including effects of crab waist, errors and beam-beam. Need a table of tolerances need to optimise dynamic aperture with interaction region (crab waist...) J.D. Closeout report
