Laboratory Notebooks

Lab Notebook Required Items (entries must be in pen) Table of Contents Experiment Title Experiment Objective(s) Materials/Methods (Procedures) Results/Discussion Conclusion(s) Signatures (both project director and colleague)

Table of Contents Allow 2-4 blank pages at the beginning of the notebook for your table of contents Experiment titles should be descriptive and reflect nature of experiment (avoid “experiment #1, experiment #2, etc.) Generally list titles in chronological sequence A single experiment may span multiple sets of pages

Experiment Objective(s) Objective should effectively communicate goal or purpose of the experiment Concise, yet descriptive Draft similar to those you have written for your proposal – but specific to a particular experiment

Procedures Provide all experimental details Process (times, temperatures, sequence of steps, details of test conditions) Ingredients (sources, identification codes) Equipment (company, model, accessories) Ultimate test: experiment could be reproduced by someone else based on what you have written.

Results/Conclusions Results/Discussion: include actual data summary and/or observations What are the findings (What happened?) Conclusions: What do the findings mean? Relates back to experimental objective Must be supported by the data Recommendations for further study

Miscellaneous Helps Continued use of a defined procedure or experimental materials Define in detail once Refer to original citation by date/page no. Multiple-day experiments “Continued on p. 33” “Continued from p. 27” Not all single entries will have all elements (objective, procedures, results, etc.)

Other Necessary Elements All entries should indicate the date of the described laboratory activity All notebook entries should be made in pen. Computer-generated printouts of data may be taped into notebook (not include loose) All notebooks should be signed by both the project director and colleague at the end of the final entry of the day.

Laboratory Orientation

Facility/Ingredient Needs Additional equipment needs - let us know ASAP what else you might need Shopping list have items to TA by Friday (12 noon) for the following weeks lab specify amounts needed Minimize grocery items utilize industrial ingredients keep unnecessary costs to a minimum

Laboratory Activities Laboratory Structure M W; 2:30 - 5:20 PM expectation to effectively utilize entire lab period outside lab activities pre-approved by instructor lab coats should be worn Come prepared to lab with specific objectives in mind no lab handouts provided each project director has responsibility to determine necessary lab activities

Lab Layout/Organization Work Stations each of you will be assigned a workspace equipment/utensils ok to borrow, but return at the end of the day scales shared between multiple individuals weigh boats provided (please plan to wash/reuse) a variety of weighing spatulas are available

Storage of Equipment/Ingredients Large equipment ok to be left on countertop Small equipment stow away in assigned storage cupboards Ingredients Follow-up on ingredient needs each of you will have an assigned storage space (don’t store ingredients on countertop) can use bulk containers to store frequently-used ingredients (i.e. sugar, flour, etc.)

Use of the Refrigerator/Freezer Lab Refrigerators only use the refrigerator in lab (do not use the one for the child development lab!!) All items stored in the refrigerator must be labeled with the following information: Name Class (FS 489) Date Remember to throw away outdated items!!!

Lab Clean-Up Policy Workstations: inspect workstation prior to the beginning of each lab (report any existing problems) all dishes used must be washed and placed in drying racks (items borrowed from other work stations should be returned to drying rack of the appropriate workstation) countertops, sinks, tables, and stoves should be wiped down after each lab clean up spills on floor (sweep, mop if needed) Dishcloths/Dishtowels available check-out with TA before leaving lab

Miscellaneous Resources Access to equipment outside the lab (e.g., pH meter) Glassware let us know of any specific needs Ingredient Stocks - check with TA
