GEOG 442 – Day 23
2
FLOW – Tuesday, 7 p.m., Bldg. 356, Rm. 111 Irena Salina’s documentary that investigates what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century - The World Water Crisis. Salina builds a case against the privatization of the world’s dwindling fresh water supply with a focus on politics, pollution, human rights, and the emergence of a domineering world water cartel. Interviews with scientists and activists intelligently reveal the rapidly building crisis. Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround. This film won the Grand Jury Award at the Mumbai International Film Festival. Co-hosted with VIU’s Solutions Sustainability Network. A post- screening discussion will be moderated by members of Solutions.

Housekeeping Items Did anyone go the Global Film Fest on the weekend? A reminder about “Island on the Edge” today at 2:30 in the Theatre (Building 310) Anyone presenting on Wednesday? Sorry about the glitsch with the enrolment key for the Moodle site; I'm still learning how the system works. I have hopefully gotten it fixed or will have shortly. I have produced five copies of the document – or at least the parts people have sent me. Thanks for those who did send their stuff.

Housekeeping Items I apologize for not having more of a plan from the start, but this is the first time I have 442 this way. What I would like to do is workshop the draft today, and then present it on Wednesday to some guests I have invited (not as many as I would have liked). The final draft would be due on the 2nd. The workshopping today will involve breaking into five groups, with the five copies being supplemented by whoever has a laptop and can wi-fi the document off Moodle. The five groups will be: 1)Rich & Caitee – outline and evaulation group;

Housekeeping Items 2) Julian, Nigel, and Craig- design principles, prototypes, and specific technologies & materials [note that I would like to move Craig to after Nigel in the outline] 3) Maury, Matt, and Kevin- location, building context, and outside activities; 4) Deanna, Tyler, and Constanza- inside activities and design; 5) Rob and Jeff- accessibility and awnings. Once you've had a chance to review and critique the document in the small groups, we'll reconvene in the large group and hear reports from each and come to consensus on changes & refinements.

Housekeeping Items On Wednesday, if people come, we'll present it to our guests and get them to critique it, either in the whole group or in small groups so that we can incorporate their thoughts. The people I have tried to invite include: Craig from Facilities, someone from Green Building, someone from Interior Design, Daryl, and Andrew. If they don't come, I will catch us up on the textbook. The deadline for the final draft, as mentioned is the 2 nd (I will try to send comments a few days in advance). If the Moodle site is working, I would ask people to read through intermediate drafts (i.e. put yours up before it's completely polished for feedback) and offer their feedback.
