Cryogens Fluids which at ambient temperature cannot be liquefied solely by pressure Include liquid oxygen, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen and helium; solid carbon dioxide

Hazards Oxygen deficiency- < 19.5% Oxygen enrichment- > 22% Cold liquid Over-pressurisation in closed containers Manual handling

Standards Risk assessment needed, covering: Handling of cryogens Filling of cryogens into containers Transportation – esp. in vehicles and where lifts and staircases are involved Storage and use in confined spaces and other areas with little or no ventilation

Risk Controls Oxygen monitor, set at 19.5% / 22% Sufficiently large room Adequate ventilation Rescue and first aid provision Presence of at least two people

Risk Controls Regular checks to ensure container venting mechanisms work effectively Never travelling in lifts with cryogens Suitable equipment PPE Training – inc. manual handling
