Social capital The “red thread” during our discussions was social capital and we will in this presentation keep the focus on this aspect. Social capital is related to social networks and is widely used to explain how communities function and how social organization depends on trust, norms and networks. Bridging & Bounding

Health, poverty & social capital The main target is to look at how the economic situation has an effect on social capital.

Mental health Parents with mental health problems. Risk of children living in poverty to develop a poor mental health. The economic situation in a poor family can create worries for the children. Children who are socially excluded by their peers, because of the economic situation, this can lead to a lack of social capital.

Psychical health Children living in poor families have higher risks of experiencing problems with their psychical health. Leisure and other sports activities can be hard to access for poor children when fees are impossible for them to pay. Children who live in a low income family can have a bad diet.

Disabilities Children living with parents who have disabilities can be at risk of poverty. Children who have disabilities and are poor are double stigmatized. The society has not the facilities that disabled children need.

e.g. Portugal It has passed from a country of emigration to an immigration country: the entrance of people is superior to the exit. Legal immigrant communities in Portugal: Brazilians, Ukrainians, Cabo Verdians and Angolans. Portugal became a country of immigration and thus, the infrastructure developed around immigration and ethnic groups has not been as fertile as in other societies. e.g. Western.
