2 What is mitigation? An explanation of a unforeseen event or series of events that accounts for why a period of learning or assessment has been adversely affected Illness Accident Social difficulties Other misfortunes

3 What is not mitigatable Choices made by student that led to non- attendance of teaching or lack of preparation for exams Sport Holidays Extra-curricular activities Religious observations Paid employment Charity work

4 Your role and responsibilities Must submit a mitigation form drawing our attention to the event/s and the effect they had on your learning/revision/exam performance Don’t assume we already know, even if we do Must submit a new form for each year/sit of exams, with supporting documentation

5 Deadline for mitigation THURSDAY 7 JUNE by 5pm We must receive mitigation form and supporting documentation. You need to apply for supporting documentation well in advance of this date- your mitigation cannot be considered without it

6 What if I don’t inform you? You will not be able to raise this mitigation at a later date You will not be able to appeal at a later date Ie you must accept the consequences of not submitting mitigation

7 Supporting documentation Bereavement- copy of death certificate Illness- doctors note, medical certificate, student support and counselling letter Serious health issues- letter from consultant Hospital admission- letter from consultant stating admission and discharge dates Burglaries/car accidents- police crime number on official police paper

8 Mitigation as result of 3 rd party Illness/death- letter/certificate, plus letter from students doctor/counsellor stating the effects this has had on the student Financial crisis- bills/bank statements/official requests for repossession Issues for which there is no supporting documentation- supporting letter from year tutor, can be sealed and kept confidential

9 Accommodation issues Letter from University informing you of move Date of actual move Letter from year tutor outlining the effects it has had on your learning/exam performance Any other official letters

10 Supporting documentation We are not allowed to request information on your behalf- it is your responsibility to provide all necessary documentation, so if in doubt, ask us for advice.

11 What does mitigation provide? Exams- first attempt or second attempt, with the affected mark being erased Learning- a repeat of year- may need doctors letter re fitness to return to course An internal resit of module An external resit of module

12 What mitigation does not provide An adjustment of actual marks Progress to next year where fails exist

13 What happens to mitigation? Mitigation Panel meet before exam board Year tutors, senior tutor, Margaret Strict confidentiality Don’t see exam marks Judge whether mitigation is admissible or inadmissible Inform Board of Examiners for their decision, maintaining confidentiality

14 Why mitigation might not be admissible lack of supporting documentation Lack of evidence about effect on YOU Dates don’t match ‘minor’- the cat, the blister
