State of the World

Population growth

Population growth curve

Consequences of population growth and overpopulation State of the human population Degradation of the environment – Loss of soil – Decrease in natural resources Global warming Species extinction ** Local issues

World density

Life expectancy

Lack of access to water

Percentage of population that is undernourished

Consequences of population growth and overpopulation State of the human population Degradation of the environment – Loss of soil – Decrease in natural resources Global warming Species extinction ** Local issues

Soil degradation

Decrease in natural resources Level of deforestation

This image of Earth was created using data from four different satellites. It shows fires burning on land areas (red dots) and a large aerosol cloud over the Atlantic ocean formed by the burning biomass in Africa. It also indicates dust and cloud cover around the globe. Satellite data and images such as this one are beginning to give us a more comprehensive view of the Earth's interrelated systems and climate.

Consequences of population growth and overpopulation State of the human population Degradation of the environment – Loss of soil – Decrease in natural resources Global warming Species extinction ** Local issues

Species extinction Due to: – Loss of habitat – Global warming – Overharvesting – Pollution

Local issues

Space Water availability: – If water is a limiting issue (Utah is a desert state), what will happen with increased populations? Population issues

Local issues Air quality Water quality Food quality There are increasing levels of toxic chemicals in the air, water and soil (  food) triggering many chronic diseases such as asthma, cancers, lung diseases, birth defects

What can we do? Save Recycle Insulate our house Use bike if possible Carpool Use local foods Etc …. Lobby our law makers for: - better laws to protect the environment - promote alternative energy - promote public transportation - etc……
