The student will understand the how and why people traveled to California during the Gold Rush. The students will understand the people of the period and their roles during Gold Rush. The students will understand the economic conditions of the Gold Rush and how it affected the people of the period. Target Objectives

Standards 4.3.1 Compare how and why people traveled to California and the routes they traveled (e.g., James Beckwourth, John Bidwell, John C. Fremont, Pio Pico). 4.4.2 Explain how the Gold Rush transformed the economy of California, including the types of products produced and consumed, changes in towns (e.g., Sacramento, San Francisco), and economic conflicts between diverse groups of people.

Final Assessment This unit’s assessment will be a summative performance assessment based on the student’s completed journal. The students will be scored on completion of ten journal entries. How those entries relate to each target objective and cumulative knowledge of the people, economics, and events related to the Gold Rush.
