2. What is an input? Input is data or instructions that the computer uses! –When you use word processing, save your work, or print a page your inputting. Types of Input devices: –Keyboards –Pointing devices –Scanning Devices –Character & Mark Recognition Devices –Image Capture Devices –Audio-input Devices

3. Keyboards one of the most common ways to input data Keyboards translate numbers, letters and special characters. There are 3 types of keyboards 1.Traditional keyboard 2.Folding keyboards 3.Ergonomic keyboard

4. Pointing devices Mouse –Mechanical Mouse –Optical mouse –Cordless/wireless mouse Joystick Touch Screen Light Pen

5. Scanning Devices Optical Scanners 1. Flatbed scanner – much like a copy machine 2. Portable scanner – handheld device that slides across images. Bar Code Readers – ex. Grocery store scanners Character & Mark Recognition devices – scanners that are able to recognize special characters and marks.

6. Image Capturing Devices Optical scanners like traditional copy machines can make a copy from an original. Digital Cameras Similar to traditional cameras except that images are recorded digitally on a disk or in the camera’s memory rather than on film Digital video Cameras

7. Digitizing Devices Digitizing devices convert a sketch or figure into a form that can be processed by a computer. Graphic tablets These record sketches and tracings of maps and other drawings. Digital notebooks These record handwritten notes (typically a notepad positioned on top of an electronic pad or tablet).

8. Audio-Input Devices Audio-Input devices convert sounds for processing. Voice recognition systems - These use a microphone, sound card, and special software. They allow users to operate computers and to create documents using voice commands. Discrete-speech recognition systems - These are able to recognize individual words based on their sound. Continuous-speech recognition systems - These are able to distinguish between same-sounding words by evaluating the context within which individual words are used.

9. What is Output? Output is processed data or information. Output devices provide output for people by translating what the computer has processed into a form that people can use and understand. Output devices are any hardware used to provide or to create output from the computer.

10. Monitor The most frequently used output device. 2 important characteristics of monitors: 1. Size Size is indicated by the diagonal length of its viewing area. 2. Clarity Clarity is indicated by its resolution Types of Monitors Cathode-ray tube (CRT) Flat-panel monitors/Liquid crystal display (LCD) Other Monitors: E-books Data Projectors High-definition television (HDTV)

11. Printers Ink-Jet printer The ink printers spray small droplets of ink at high speed onto the surface of the paper. Laser Printer The laser printer uses a technology similar to that used in a photocopying machine. Thermal Printer Uses heat elements to produce images on heat-sensitive paper. Other Printers Include; Dot-matrix printers – Dot-matrix printers – not high quality and pretty loud Chain printers Chain printers – used in organizations for larger printing loads Plotters Plotters – special purpose printers for producing maps, images, and architectural drawings.

12. Audio – Output Devices Audio-output devices translate audio information from the computer into sounds that people can recognize and understand. Most widely used audio-output devices are speakers and headphones.

13. Combination Input and Output Devices Some examples of combination devices are; Fax machines Fax machines –send and receive images over telephone lines(just incase you didn’t know). Multifunctional devices Multifunctional devices – typically combine scanners, printers, fax, and copying machine. Internet telephony Internet telephony – uses the internet instead of a telephone to connect 2 or more people by phone. Terminal Terminal – connects you to a mainframe or other type of computer called a host computer/server.
