Is there synergy between ILC and SuperB? Steve Playfer University of Edinburgh

SYNERGY “…is frequently described as the 2 + 2 = 5 effect to denote the fact that the combined performance is greater than the sum of its parts.” Corporate Strategy, H.I.Ansoff (1965)

100% Synergy … if SuperB adopts exactly the same technologies as ILC, but the two facilities are otherwise completely independent we get 2 + 2 = 4 What we should be talking about is … 125% Synergy

Synergy between PEP-II and KEK-B

What the B-factories learnt How to keep >1A currents in storage rings (without burning holes in the beam pipe and detectors) Continuous/Trickle injection (2003) How to control backgrounds “Competition between collaborations has led to novel analysis techniques and exploitation of new methods to make important measurements.” (P5 Panel - March 2006) A lot of information is shared between SLAC and KEK even though they are in competition!

If only the first of these statements is true the SuperB factory is parasitic to the ILC The second statement is what sells SuperB to the ILC community! Synergy between SuperB and ILC should also be a win/win situation The SuperB factory will be a better machine because of the ILC AND The Linear Collider will be a better machine because of SuperB

Common Design Features Injector Damping Rings Bunch Compression Final Focus Energy Recycling Linacs? –Much less for SuperB than ILC –Maybe not needed at all?

Damping Rings ILC 5 GeV SuperB 4-7 GeV Electron rings almost identical Positron rings somewhat different Same lattice Similar damping times Different sizes (3km - 6km) Different currents Different RF frequencies Similar bunch patterns Final focus inserted into rings (SuperB)

Final Focus Same bunch compression Similar IP geometry Different beam energies! CM energy resolution (SuperB) Different sources of backgrounds Different crossing angles (0-25 mrad) Different bunch trains (ILC) Different disruption parameters Different currents Final focus inserted into rings (SuperB)

My Synergy Ratings Damping Rings - High Final Focus - Medium Recycling Linacs - Low (None?) For more technical details see the talks by M. Biagini, P.Raimondi and A.Wolski

Comments on Timescales ILC construction assumed to begin somewhere between 2010 and 2020 SuperB construction assumed to begin somewhere between 2010 and 2014 They may be operating in sequence and/or in parallel: –SuperB may precede the ILC –SuperB is unlikely to be after ILC Does it help more to have SuperB before ILC, or is it the same if they are in parallel?

Comments on Sites SuperB and ILC almost certain to be at different sites –Large difference in location of damping rings in baseline designs –Both need the full currents of the damping rings for luminosity A chance for two different regions (US, Asia, Europe) to have the facilities –Involves more accelerator physicists in R&D and operations
