1 VE 2009- 6th Electric Vehicle Seminar and Exhibition Campinas, November 9-11, 2009

2 Sustainable road mobility: A major challenge Key role of transportation in: economic growth worldwide increasing exchange between people enhancing individual freedom improving living standards

3  That requires all of us to act now, in order to promote a more sustainable road mobility. Sustainable road mobility: A major challenge BUT Transportation can impact negatively on: the environment: (CO2 emissions, use of non renewable resources) people's health (toxic emissions) people’s safety (road accidents) quality of life (noise, traffic congestion)

4 …with insights and in depth understanding on the latest advanced vehicle technology and solutions, in order to… Challenge Bibendum: Definition (1/2) to political & decision makers Initiated by Michelin in 1998, the Challenge Bibendum is a concerted effort by pre-eminent players in the automotive world to provide to : to opinion leaders

5 Challenge Bibendum: Definition (2/2) … while retaining the enjoyment and individual liberty of road mobility. Reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) and local pollutant emissions, Lower the number of road accidents, Reduce the energy consumption per vehicle, Improve traffic flow, as well as the correlation between vehicle design and ultimate use

6 Are Electric Vehicles part of the solution? Motors with a very high efficiency. Very low CO2 emissions with low carbon electricity production.. Energy largely available. Zero tailpipe emission.

7 Are Electric Vehicles part of the solution? AND Comfortable to drive with simplified transmission as a result of high torque. Braking by the electric motor => energy recovery and spare the mecanical brakes Silent.

21 WHY are there not more EVs on the market today? Energy storage on board Low range High cost of high density batteries Recharging time AND Today’s EVs have generally been designed around ICE powertrains Infrastructure was designed for ICE vehicles The road mobility mindset is formatted for ICE vehicles

22 Some insights to drive EV usage? 1.Offer EV products where the ICE is not really appropriate: Short distances Urban deliveries Numerous stops and starts (urban buses) 2.Offer exotic, high performance cars for the wealthy 3.Put in place proper road regulations, tax systems and government incentives (EVs are of general interest) 4.Favor the development of zero emission modes of transport in city centers by restricting access 5.Put in place the proper charging infrastructure in public and companies parkings 6.Design the vehicles around electric powertrains 7.Pursue battery development: improve the performances and lower the costs 8.And let’s continue to be innovative and imaginative in new technologies and business models

23 We need an OPEN DEBATE and this is what Challenge Bibendum is about: WE SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS WHEN WE ARE IN THE THROES OF A TECHNOLOGY REVOLUTION Ken Olsen, CEO of Digital Equipment Corporation in DEC 1977 when he said « There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home ». and not fall into the trap like: or this internal note at Western Union in 1876 “The telephone has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value for us”

24 Let’s rally together for sustainable mobility Challenge Bibendum Rio: 2010, May 30 – June 2

25 Challenge Bibendum 2010: Main Themes Towards a renaissance of road transport after the economic downturn. Roadmap for a sustainable road transport: – Follow- up of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (Copenhagen, 30 November to 11 December 2009) and the first Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety (Moscow, 19-20 November 2009) – Sustainable Biofuels. – Electric vehicles: update on the development programs – Urban mobility in Latin America

26 Thank you! And see you in Rio!
