Print Low-tech Offers instruction without a librarian Can be done at convenience Revision Effort Examples: Pathfinders or Handouts, Signs, bookmarks, table tents, mousepads Workbooks or assignments

Orientation Most general type of instruction – Covers very basic information Building tour or General overview of the library & services Introduction to catalog or basic resources Also know as “one-shot” – “You have one shot to get to them” Problems: Pack too much information into the session Students may not pay attention - Compulsory Repeaters - frustration

Course Integrated Requested by teacher/faculty – collaborative effort Focused on particular resources or subject materials More than one session Often attached to a project or need – an outcome is expected Students pay more attention – see a benefit from session

Outreach Take instruction out of the library to the user Outreach shows people how they can incorporate the library into their daily life Great opportunity for Library PR -- Be creative! Examples:Lecture to a community group – Public Library Presentation to faculty in a departmental meeting Training a company ’ s staff in their offices – Special Library Roving Librarians who go outside the reference area to help

Online Instruction Offers instruction to wide audience Allows for multiple use and learning styles Student centered Anytime – any pace Takes more time (and $$) to design and construct

One-on-One Usually requested by the user -- Much more personalized Usually in-depth instruction to answer a complex need – Census Put information to immediate use -- Much more likely to remember

“ Teachable Moment ” Everyone is an instructor Often the best kind -- Answers immediate need of user Put information to immediate use -- Much more likely to remember
