3. Ethics (cont. 1)  Bentham was a Hedonist. Really???  Hedonistic calculus: Intensity Intensity Duration Duration Certainty or uncertainty Certainty or uncertainty Propinquity or remoteness Propinquity or remoteness  Bentham believed that this calculus made Utilitarianism objective.

4. Ethics (cont. 2)  Is this then a Godless doctrine?  Are motives irrelevant?  Can we really predict the outcomes of our actions?  Is this calculus practical?  Mills – elected officials and women’s rights. Appeals to our conscience.  What is pleasure/happiness?
