3 Using portfolios for assessment n What is a portfolio anyway? –a demonstration of work-based achievement over a specific period –a structured collection of evidence of competence in a given area of work –a means of identifying and monitoring strengths and opportunities for improvement

4 Using portfolios for assessment n Why use portfolios for assessment? –learning can be ‘customised’ to suit individual student –students are able to demonstrate evidence of achievement in their field –a variety of evidence can be exhibited

5 Using portfolios for assessment n Where should we use portfolios? –for in-service work where outcomes refer to work-based activities –where it is necessary to demonstrate competence and safe practice –for project based work

6 Using portfolios for assessment n How can we use portfolio assessment effectively? –should demonstrate an understanding of the processes undertaken –should contain evidence of reflective practice –VACS
