Post install After install completes, take out the install CD/DVD Reboot Check if boot loader is working properly Boot into other OSs as well Boot up Linux Watch for errors during first boot Wait for login screen (graphic display works) Go through first time setup wizard Login (not as root )

After login Create users Familiarize yourself with the GUI Check desktop settings Make shortcuts Check internet and network connection Check hardware detection Time zone

Software update & install Software update is essential after an install internet connection is needed Use Update Manager System tray or from menu Installs new updates to installed software Use apt and Synaptic to install new software best (easiest) possible way may need to configure for less popular software internet connection is needed Can use install CDs also

Apt and Synaptic Download apt http://apt.freshrpms.net/ http://apt.freshrpms.net Install apt rpm -Uvh apt.xxx.rpm Update apt apt-get update Install any package apt-get install package-name Install Synaptic

Linux Live CD An OS stored on a CD/DVD Can run OS from the CD without installation to hard drive OS is loaded in memory (RAM) reduced performace due to lower RAM available System returns to previous OS after reboot First LiveCD for OS 7 Available for most OSs Good auto-configuration and hardware support
