Monocot vs. Dicot What is the difference?

Seeds Monocot- one cotyledon, never emerges above soil Dicot- two cotyledons, emerge above soil as two seed leaves

Roots Monocot- fibrous root system; looks like a mop Dicot- tap root system with small secondary roots

Stem Structure Monocot- scattered vascular bundles Dicot- vascular bundles form an outer ring

Flowers Monocot- petals in 3’s or 6 Dicot- petals in 4 or 5, or multiples up to 10

Leaf Structure Monocot- parallel veins Dicot- netlike veins
