Why this Sense of Place project? Rich historic character of US-12 –cultural heritage of local communities –movement of goods, services, people, and ideas –connected narratives through time and place Promote US-12 as a Historic Route with our youth

Culminating Feature Student projects capturing the pictures, sounds, and stories of communities along the past and present-day path of US-12 –authentic products of learning –authentic instruction for learning –authentic audience for sharing

Project Components Photos and sounds of the community represented by its ZIP Code Text that introduces, explains, and documents… –what the community looks like today –how the community has changed over time –what groups make up the community –showcases US-12 in their community

Project Features Readily available resources for teachers to instruct students on: –Cultural geography –Human/Environment Interaction –Integration of technology Student skills develop include: –Writing for an audience beyond the classroom –Conducting an interview –Photography –Web Design (thanks to the Land Information Access Association)

How does this support the US-12 Heritage Trail Association? Provide an education for future generations about the communities along US-12 Opportunity to share ideas, information, research, and lessons from teachers, historians, genealogists, and governments agencies Provides an effective hands-on teaching tool for our teachers and their “millennial” students. Establishes an education network among stakeholders
