MAIDU Location: East Sacramento Valley, placer county, Roseville Houses were built down into the ground Made from, wood, bark, and dirt

MAIDU ROUNDHOUSE The Roundhouse was a meeting place used for important ceremonies and dances.

MAIDU- FOOD Maidu were hunter gatherers Hunted wild game Deer, Squirrels, rabbits, pigeons, dove Fished in the local rivers Salmon, trout and steelhead Nuts Acorns, pine nuts Fruits and Veggies Blackberries, strawberries, plums, grapes, corms and root vegetables

MAIDU TOOLS Mortar Used to grind nuts into powder for cooking Digging Stick Used to dig root vegetables out of the ground Obsidian Arrowheads hunting Flintstone Knives Cutting various things

MAIDU CLOTHES Men wore loin cloths Made of leather or woven tule grass Women wore skirts/aprons Made of woven bark and woven tule grass During cold months men and women would wear leather and fur robes and usually would wear leather moccasins

CHUMASH Location: Southern California: Los Angeles, Santa Barbara Their house was called an “Ap” and looked like a dome Made willow vines, tall grass, branches and cat tails

CHUMASH SWEATHOUSE Called an “Apa yik” Mostly used by men Used for Ceremonies Purify and cleanse the body

CHUMASH FOOD Fishing Over 100 types of fish along the ocean and rivers Shellfish including abalone, clams, and mussels Sea Mammals- otter, seals Hunting Wild game such as bear, deer, squirrel, rabbit, water fowl Gathering Acorns- ***Warm Acorn Soup*** Seaweed, root veggies

CHUMASH TOOLS Spear- catching fish and wild game Bow and Arrow- catching fish and wild game Net- catching fish Mortar- grinding nuts Fish Hook- made from abalone and mussel shells
