Lesson 3-6 Compound Inequalities August 22, 2014

Before Beginning Something New IMPORTANT REMINDER!!!!!! Whatever side the variable starts on in your inequality is the same side the variable MUST be on in your answer unless you also switch the inequality symbol.

Example 9 + 4t > 21 The variable is on the left side. So my answer will also show the variable on the left side. t > 3 I can switch the variable to the other side, but I also MUST switch the variable. 3 < t

Put It to Use Hopefully you understand inequalities better now. Let’s put it to practice. Take about 5 minutes to work some problems from the “Reteaching” worksheet for 3-4. We will then take our Unit 1 Quiz A before beginning something new.

Daily Learning Target I will solve and graph inequalities containing the word and. I will solve and graph inequalities containing the word or.

Example 1 – Writing a Compound Inequality A)All real numbers that are greater than -2 and less than 6 n > -2 and n < 6 -2 < n and n < 6 -2 < n < 6 B)All real number that are less than 0 or greater than or equal to 5 t < 0 or t ≥ 5

Example 2 – Solving a Compound Inequality with AND

Example 3 – Solving a Compound Inequality with OR 3t + 2 < -7 or -4t + 5 < 1 Answer: t 1
