1 Subject Pronouns and ser; Gustar with an Infinitive Unidad 1 Lecci ón 1

2 Subject Pronouns...  indicate who is being described or who does the action in a sentence  Singular forms: I = yo you (familiar) = tú* he = él she = ella you (formal) = usted (Ud.)*

3 Subject Pronouns (cont.)  Plural forms: we = nosotros(as) you (familiar, plural) = vosotros(as) they = ellos(as) you (formal, plural) = ustedes (Uds.)

4 *tú vs. Ud.  Use tú with a friend, family member, or someone younger.  Use Ud. with a person you don’t know, someone older, or someone for whom you want to show respect.

5 ser = to be (to identify a person; to say where a person is from) yo – soynosotros(as) – somos tú – eresvosotros(as) – sois él, ella, - esellos, ellas, - son usted ustedes

6 Gustar + infinitive  Gustar = to like, to be pleasing  Infinitive = verb not conjugated. In English: to + verb. In Spanish: a verb that ends in -ar, -er, or –ir.

7 Gustar = to like, to be pleasing  me gusta – I like  te gusta – you like  le gusta – he likes, she likes, you like  nos gusta – we like  os gusta – you (pl.) like  les gusta – they like, you (pl.) like

8 Now add the infinitive:  Me gusta correr. ________________________________  Te gusta jugar. ________________________________  Nos gusta leer. ________________________________

9 To further emphasize or identify the person you are talking about…  a mí – to me (A mí me gusta...)  a ti – to you (A ti te gusta...)  a él – to him  a ella – to her  a Ud. – to you  a nostros – to us  a vosotros – to you  a ellos – to them  a ellas – to them  a Uds. – to you
