About the Exam/Test These chapter tests/exams are worth 20% of your total grade. There are only 2 of these tests this semester! That means each of these tests is worth an entire letter grade!

There are two listening portions (don’t worry, I will be reading it outloud) I will read EACH listening portion twice. Pen or pencil is okay.

Things that *may or may not* appear on the exam… Introductions – Stating your name, asking how people are, asking where people are from, replying to such questions Numbers Weather Days of the week and months of the year Things in the classroom Prepositions Telling Time Classes Question words Activities and how to conjugate the verbs Knowing when to use ser vs estar (how you feel and where you are… etc.) Describing things and people with adjectives – Making sure these adjectives agree in number and gender! Describe people’s nationalities Deber + Infinitive Me gusta + infinitive
8
Actividad de escuchar 1.Open your books to page 75. 2.We will do Activity 2-29.
9
Enfoque Cultural 1-03 (The writing activity where you summarized a Spanish paragraph in English) – I would have liked to see better summaries. Some people wrote more than 10 sentences, some wrote three short sentences. – If you didn’t get 100%, it’s because your paragraph was too short or the information was completely wrong (wrong ages given, for exmaple) – Some of you wrote SUPER detailed paragraphs in your own words. Even if every tiny detail wasn’t translated, I could see you took the time to answer this thoroughly. I wish I could award extra credit!!
10
Numbers Know your numbers! Know the difference betwween 3 and 13 – This was a common mistake in the homework
11
Adjectives 1.Adjectives go after the noun they describe 2.Adjectives need to agree in number with the noun they describe 3.Adjectives need to agree in gender with the noun they describe According to many of the adjectives people used in the homework, a lot of the class thinks I’m a boy.
12
Subject Verb Agreement What is the Subject? – Basically the thing the sentence is about. What does this mean for you? – Basically, make sure you are conjugating the verb into the correct form How can I do this? – Look at the form of the verb in the question or instructions. This is usually a pretty good hint. – Really think about who or what is doing the action (verb). How would you conjugate that verb to illustrate that that person is doing the action?
13
Verbs Only ONE conjugated verb is needed per sentence. – What does “Yo soy tengo dos lapices.” mean? – What does “Yo soy es agradable.” mean? Think about our conjugation charts. What verbs do tengo, soy, and es come from? What do those conjugations mean? (Who is doing the action) tener = to have tengotenemos tienestenéis tienetienen ser = to be soysomos eressois esson
14
Other verbs to know (that change in the “yo” form) hacer = to do, to make hagohacemos haceshacéis hacehacen saber = to know sésabemos sabessabéis sabesaben ver = to see veovemos vesvéis vetven yonosotros / nosotras túvosotros / vosotras él / ella / Usted ellos / ellas / Ustedes
15
El verbo tener It is irregular We use tener to express possession. – And age! It’s a “boot” verb – Meaning the irregularities happen ONLY in the singular forms and the third person plural tener = to have tengotenemos tienestenéis tienetienen tener = to have tengotenemos tienestenéis tienetienen
16
How to talk about verbs as activities When you want to say you like to do an activity (verb) we use the infinitive. Unlike in English, where we use the –ing form of the verb. – I like running. Me gusta correr. – I like studying. Me gusta estudiar. However, in Spanish, whenever we use the –ing form of the verb, it ALWAYS and ONLY translates that the action is currently happening right now. So, we have to use the infinitive form (meaning the verb must end in –ar, -er, or –ir). We also use the infinitive when the verb is the subject of the sentence. – Running is boring. Correr es aburrido.
17
Possession 1.¿De quién es el bolígrafo? 2.¿De quién son los libros? 3.¿De quién es la computadora? 4.¿De quién son los discos compactos? 5.¿De quién es el cuaderno? 6.¿De quién es la mochila? Soy de la computadora. Soy de el bolígrafo. Quién vs quienes
18
deber + infinitive To express that someone should or ought do something, use the deber + infinitive construction. Deber is a regular –ER verb deber = to ought to (should) debodebemos debesdebéis debedeben Saco malas notes. Yo debo estudiar. Eres gorda. Tú debes correr. Ella es delgada. Ella debe comer.
19
Ser vs. Estar
20
“How you feel and where you are, always use the verb estar” So we use ser to describe people’s personalities. But what happens if we use estar with adjectives?
21
Adjectives change in meaning when we use them with estar instead of ser – Ustedes son listos. The book told us to use ser with adjectives. What do you think listo means with ser? (Hint: look at your vocab list) – ¿Ustedes están listos? I say this all the time! What do you think it means? Do you think I’m asking you if you’re all smart? Think about when I ask this question. What do you think it means?
22
Ways to (possibly) (unknowingly) offend people in Spanish Use estar when you should use ser – Or vice-versa Ella es muy bonita Ella está muy bonita. Ella es delgada. Ella está delgada.
23
Can you guess the difference in meaning? Ella es/estáalegre. Éles/ estáviejo. Nosotros somos/estamosnerviosos. Yosoy/estoycansado. Tú eres/estásmal. Ustedesson/estántontos. La profesora es/estáaburrida.
24
El verbo gustar We use the verb “gustar” to express likes and dislikes (places, activities, things… never people) We NEVER use gustar to talk about liking people Gustar means “to please” Gustar needs an indirect object pronoun Otherwise, when we conjugate it, we would be saying “I please the pizza” or “I please to dance” – Note that “please” here is a verb, not a polite request. So in Spanish, when we talk about likes and dislikes, we are literally saying “______ is pleasing to me” The form of the verb gustar depends on the subject of our sentence. how to say “to like” me gusta me gustan nos gusta nos gustan te gusta te gustan vos gusta vos gustan le gusta le gustan les gusta les gustan
25
El verbo gustar Indirect object pronouns: basically the person or thing receiving the action of the verb But wait, I thought infinitives mean “to _____” They do, but in Spanish we use the infinitive to express activities when they are the subject of a sentence. “Me gusta correr” “Me gusta estudiar” “Running is pleasing to me” “Studying is pleasing to me” “Me gusta la pizza” “Me gustan las pizzas” “Pizza is pleasing to me”“The pizzas are pleasing to me”
26
El verbo gustar 1.I like the television. 2.I like to dance. 3.I like the books. 4.You like to walk. 5.He likes to work. 6.We like chalkboards. 7.The students like to study. 8.Your parents like to talk with friends. 9.You (formal) like to write. 10.She likes the classes. how to say “to like” me gusta me gustan nos gusta nos gustan te gusta te gustan vos gusta vos gustan le gusta le gustan les gusta les gustan
