Subject Pronouns A brief introduction
2
Subject Pronouns Subject Pronouns are usually a shorter and quicker way of referring to a noun, specifically the subject of a sentence. Common Subject Pronouns in English include "he," "she," “you," “I" and “we," all of which often would be replaced by longer words or more words if we didn't have the pronouns at our disposal.
3
We will use these Subject Pronouns throughout the entire year. Learning them now will help you advance easily and quickly. Yomeans “I” Tú means “you” El, Ella, Usted (Ud.) ▫Él means “he” ▫Ella means “she” ▫Usted (abbreviated as Ud.) means “you” Nosotrosmeans “we” Vosotros means “you all” Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes (Uds.) Ellos means “they “ (group of people including at least one boy) Ellas means “they” (group of girls only) Ustedes (Uds.) means “you all” You may notice that both Usted and Tú both mean “you”. We will discuss the difference on the next slide. (There is a similar difference between Vosotros and Uds., but we will learn that in a later chapter) Notice the group on the left are all singular pronouns and the group on the right are all plural pronouns.
4
Tú vs. Usted (Ud.) Tú is informal. ▫Use tú when speaking to friends, family, people your own age, children, and pets. Usted is formal. ▫Use it to show respect ▫When talking to people you don’t know well ▫With older people, and people in positions of authority. In writing, usted is almost always abbreviated Ud., with a capital U. It is always pronounced as Usted (Ooh-sted), even when abbreviated.
