Tener phrases Use of tener in a phrase that in English uses to be.

Use In Spanish, we have learned that tener can be used in some places that in English we would use the verb to be. One such circumstance was age. We say “I am 14 years old.” In Spanish they say “Tengo catorce años.” In English we say “I am hungry.” They say “Tengo hambre.”

Tener Phrases Tener calor – to be hot Tener cuidado – to be careful Tener frío- to be cold Tener miedo de – to be afraid of Tener prisa – to be in a hurry Tener razón – to be right Tener sueño – to be sleepy Tener suerte – to be lucky

Other tener expressions Tener que (+ infinitive verb) – to have to (do something.) –Tengo que estudiar – I have to study Tener ganas de (+ infinitive ) – to feel like (doing something) –Tengo ganas do bailar – I feel like dancing.
