2 Stating your name To ask someone their name you say ¿Cómo te llamas? (informal) Or ¿Cómo se llama? (formal) To answer say: Me llamo….

3 Titles The words señor, señora, and señorita mean “sir,” “madam,” and “miss” when used alone. When they are used with people’s last names, they mean “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” and “Miss,” and they are abbreviated Sr., Sra., and Srta. (Note that the abbr. are CAPITALIZED). In Spanish, you should address adults as señor, señora, or señorita, or use the titles Sr., Sra., or, Srta. with their last names.

5 Rules for saying good-bye The usual expression to use when saying good-bye to someone is ¡Adiós! If you plan to see the person again soon, you can say ¡Hasta pronto! or ¡Hasta luego! If you plan to see the person the next day, you can say ¡Hasta mañana! You will frequently hear the informal expression ¡Chao! Especially in Spain as well as in some countries of Latin America

7 Tú v. Usted (Ud.) Use tú when speaking to: -friends -family -people your own age -children -pets Tú is considered familiar/informal

8 For most Spanish Speakers there are 2 ways to say “you” when talking to 1 person: tú and usted (Ud.) Use usted to show respect and when talking to: -acquaintances -older people -people in positions of authority When writing usted, it is almost ALWAYS abbr. Ud. Ud. is considered formal. Summarize

9 Speaking politely Whenever you ask for something, remember to be polite and say por favor. Whenever someone gives you something or does something for you remember to say gracias. There are several ways to express You’re welcome in Spanish: De nada. Por nada. No hay de qué Summarize
