2 These words indicate possession/ownership  This is my dog – C’est MON chien  This is my turtle – C’est MA tortue.  Other words in English are Your, His, Her, Our, Their

3 The difference between English and French  English  This is Sophie’s Dog!  This is HER dog  In English the selection of the word depends on the gender of the OWNER!  French  C’est le chien de Sophie  C’est SON chien.  In French the gender of the word depends on the gender of the item owned!

4 These describing words explains ownership  Like all adjectives, they agree with the noun they describe.  They always come in front of the noun they describe.  The adjective always agree with the item owned, not the owner.

5 ADJECTIFS POSSESSIFS  Son agree with “chat” and not “Sophie”.  C’est son chat! Le chat de Sophie

6 C’est l’oiseau de Paul C’est son oiseau Masculin C’est l’oiseau de Julie

7 Marie C’est SES amies The number (singular/plural) and the gender (masculin/feminin) of the “owned” will determine the possessive adjective.

8 THE VARIOUS FORMS OF ADJECTIFS POSSESSIFS Attention: While “MON, TON, SON, have 3 forms “NOTRE, VOTRE, LEUR” have only 2 forms

10 ATTENTION  In front of a feminine singular noun that begins with a vowel.  Or a silent “H”: Use mon, ton, son, Use mon, ton, son, Amie: Féminin? Yes Starts with a vowel? Yes Is it singular? Yes Example:
