Using both in a story Preterit Use the preterit to tell: What happens - de repente- suddenly - Ayer/cuando/ un día - El año pasado - Una vez Imperfect Use the imperfect to tell: what people and things were like to give background information Set the scene

Preterit vs. Imperfect Use it to talk about something that: Happened on a specific occasion Fuimos a San Antonio el mes pasado. Visité el zoologico, 2 veces. That happened for a specific period of time Estuvimos allí un sabado y mi hijo se divertio mucho. That happened in a sequence of events; Llegamos a las diez y fuimos directamente al zoologico That happened as a reaction to something Cuando vimos los diferentes animales nos pusimos contentos Use the imperfect to emphasize the ongoing nature of a past event or situation, instead of its beginning or end. Use it: To say what people, places or things were generally like. Hace 20 años, los zoologicos eran pequeños To say what used to happen for an unspecified period of time; Simpre nos quedábamos en un hotel To set the scene; Hacía mal tiempo. No había nadie en las calles ( cuando llegué) To explain the background circumstances surroundin an event. Me sentía mal y la entrada costaba demasiado. ( Por eso no fuí al concierto.)

Ojo! The imperfect is often used after the preterit of decir, oir, or leer with que to report to something that was said, read or heard. Leí en el periodico que había dos bombas en Boston.
