DEFINITION OF GUSTAR Gustar is the equivalent in Spanish of how to say “to like”. Literally, it means “The (object) is pleasing to me”.

CONJUGATION Most verbs in Spanish (and English) are conjugated according to the subject of the sentence. Yo hablo español.

CONJUGATION Gustar (and related verbs) are the opposite! They are conjugated from the object of the sentence. Me gusta el gato.

HOW TO CONJUGATE GUSTAR Gustar is conjugated according to the object of the sentence, not according to the subject. There are only two choices of conjugations: “gusta” – (if the object is singular) “gustan” – (if the object is plural)

HOW TO CONJUGATE GUSTAR Me gusta el gato. I like the cat. Me gustan los gatos. I like the cats. (Tip – watch the article in front of whatever is being liked or disliked!)

WHO LIKES IT? Although gustar is only singular or plural, depending on whether what is being liked is singular or plural, there are numerous possibilities for who is doing the liking! We clarify who is doing the liking by using the appropriate (indirect object) pronoun.

LET’S BE CLEAR! Because “le” and “les” can be ambiguous, sometimes names are added for clarification. Other pronouns can also be added for emphasis. A Roberto, le gusta Coca-Cola. A mi, me gusta Pepsi. (A mi, a ti, a él, a ella, a Ud., a nosotros, a ellos, a ellas, a Uds.)

WHEN YOU DON’T LIKE … Put “no” in before the i.o. pronoun: No nos gustan los gatos: We don’t like the cats. No le gusta estudiar español. He doesn’t like to study Spanish.

GUSTAR + OTHER VERBS Gustar is conjugated in its singular form, the second verb is in the infinitive form. Me gusta hablar español. I like to speak Spanish. Me gusta leer novelas románticas. I like to read romantic novels. (Notice gustar is singular, even though “novels” is plural.)

“GUSTO” “Gusto” is also a word in Spanish, but it’s a noun, not a verb. “Es un gusto conocerle.” “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” “El gusto es mio.” “The pleasure is mine.”
