Present Progressive and -NDO verb forms Describing actions in Progress

In English, the present progressive is formed with the verb to be plus the –ing form of another verb. –I am watching TV. –We are studying. In Spanish, the present progressive is formed with the verb estar plus the –ndo form of another verb. –Estoy pensando. I am thinking. –¿Qué están haciendo? What are you doing?

-NDO Verb Forms -ar verbs: –Drop the –ar and add –ando to the stem of the verb. –Bailarbailando –Estudiar estudiando *-er and –ir verbs: - Drop the –er/-ir and add –iendo to the stem of the verb. - comer comiendo - escribir escribiendo

When the stem of an –er/-ir verb ends in a vowel, change –iendo to –yendo. –Leer leyendo –Creercreyendo

Uses of present progressive In Spanish, the present progressive is used only to describe an action that is taking place right at the moment. –¿ Qué estás haciendo? What are you doing? –Estoy leyendo. I am reading. –An –ing expression in English does not automatically signal a progressive tense in Spanish. Consider the following examples. –Lola sale a las ocho. Lola is leaving at 8:00. –Vamos a estudiar. We are going to study. –Tienen una fiesta hoy. They are having a party today.

The verb come and go are not ordinarily used in the progressive in Spanish. –Vamos a clase. We’re going to class. –Pablo viene a las cinco. Pablo is coming at 5:00. 5:00.
