Children who live in improvised areas have a greater risk of developing mental health issues. This issues ranges from learning difficulties, posttraumatic stress disorder but this project focuses specifically on depression and anxiety.

Families and children are classified as being in poverty based on income The factors of the child developing mental health issues are cause mostly by socioeconomic status rather then race/ethnicities (McLeod, 2013) In single mother households, the children are more likely to live in poverty

Environmental factors such as inadequate housing, food, clothing, inadequate medical care causes these children to develop mental health issues Depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder tend to have a major impact on children living in poverty.(Gonzolaz, 2005) Leaves children vulnerable to teen pregnancy, school failure, substance abuse.

The amount of time a child spends living in poverty is a strong predictor of determining whether the child will develop mental health issues. Anxiety formulated as a result of a child living in poverty leads to the child developing feelings of unhappiness, issues with dependency in adulthood. Stress caused by the conditions of living in poverty cause the child to develop anxiety Child abuse and neglect tend to be more likely to occur in low income households
