1 Edgar Allen Poe He’s best known for his poems and short fiction. He was born in Boston in 1809 and died in Baltimore in 1849. He deserves more credit than any other writer for the transformation of the short story from anecdote to art. He virtually created the detective story and perfected the psychological thriller.

4 Israfel (1831)  Written while Poe was at West Point, "Israfel" is a poem in eight stanzas of varying lengths that was first published in April 1831 in Poems of Edgar A. Poe.  It was re-worked and republished for the August 1836 issue of the Southern Literary Messenger. 5 Al Aaraaf (1829)  This poem is based on stories from the as depicted in Sura 7 of the Qur'an, and tells of the afterlife in a place called Al Aaraaf: a star that was the place between paradise and hell. 6  He also produced some of the most influential literary criticism of his time and has had a worldwide influence on literature.  As for his early life, he was the son of actress Eliza Poe and actor David Poe.  In 1827, he published his first book, ‘ Tamerlane and other poems’ anonymously under the signature ‘ A Bostanion’. The poems were heavily influenced from Byron and showed of a youthful attitude.
