Acids & Metal Carbonates ► To know how acids react with metal carbonates Saturday, August 01, 2015
3
Spot the patterns ► Using the sheet, cut out all the squares to produce two word equations E.g. ____ + ____ → ____ + ____
4
Spot the patterns ► Using the sheet, cut out all the squares to produce two word equations magnesium + hydrochloric acid → magnesium chloride + hydrogen zinc + hydrochloric acid → zinc chloride + hydrogen
5
Metal carbonate + acid ► When we react a metal carbonate with acid, we produce a salt, water and a gas ► However, this time the gas is not hydrogen – it is carbon dioxide metal carbonate + acid → salt + water + carbon dioxide
6
Carbon dioxide ► How can we prove the gas given off is carbon dioxide, not hydrogen? ► Remember hydrogen produced a squeaky pop when lit ► A good test for carbon dioxide is to bubble it through limewater – the limewater will turn cloudy if carbon dioxide is present
7
Limewater & carbon dioxide
8
Experiment ► Half fill a boiling tube with water ► Half fill a second boiling tube with limewater ► Connect the tubes together, using a delivery tube ► Then carefully add a spatula of the carbonate to the water ► Once you have done the reaction, explain how you know a reaction took place ► Can you write a word equation for this reaction?
9
Metal Carbonates Complete the metal carbonates worksheet…
10
Word Equations metal carbonate + acid → salt + water + carbon dioxide ► See if you can complete the word equations ► Can you complete the symbol equations? ► (The symbols below may help, and can be used more than once) Na 2 CO 3 CO 2 H2OH2O HCl CuCO 3 CuCl 2 CaCO 3 CaSO 4 NaCl 2HCl H 2 SO 4 2NaCl CuSO 4 MgCl 2 MgCO 3
