Topic 9 Reactions of Acids
2
Acids and Metal Carbonates Experiment
Aim: To investigate the reaction between metal carbonate and acids. Method: Limewater Acid Metal Carbonate
3
Effect of gas produced on
Results: Effect of gas produced on Reaction Limewater Sodium Carbonate + ________ Copper carbonate + _________ Conclusion: Carbonates react with acids to produce CO2(g) which is an acidic gas.

Acids and Metal Carbonates
Carbonate rocks are used in a lot of buildings. When acid rain falls on these buildings the acid reacts with the carbonate in a neutralisation reaction. Metal Carbonate +Acid Salt+Water+Carbon dioxide Calcium carbonate Calcium chloride+ +Hydrochloric acid water+carbon dioxide CaCO3 + HCl CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
5
Examples Calcium carbonate Calcium nitrate + water Nitric acid + carbon dioxide CaCO3 + 2HNO3 Ca(NO3)2 + H2O + CO2
6
Magnesium carbonate+ Magnesium chloride
hydrochloric acid water +carbon dioxide MgCO3 + HCl MgCl2 + H2O + CO2 In these reactions the H+ of the acid reacts with the CO3- ions of the metal carbonate to form water and carbon dioxide. The H+ ion is replaced by the metal ion: Neutralisation reaction.
