Measuring Volume of Liquids Most common apparatus - measuring cylinder 10 20 100 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 -comes in different sizes, e.g 10 ml, 25 ml, 50 ml, 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml
2
– measures a specific volume of liquid e.g. 10 ml, 20 ml, 50 ml Pipette Measuring Volume of Liquids Other apparatus
3
Measuring Volume of Liquids -measures volume of liquids Burette to an accuracy of 0.1 ml
4
Volumetric flask -measures a specific volume of liquid e.g. 10ml, 25 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1000 ml Measuring Volume of Liquids
5
The correct reading is taken at the bottom of the meniscus, with the eye at the same level as the meniscus
6
Precautions to take when recording the volume of a liquid (e.g. water) in a measuring cylinder 1. Place the measuring cylinder on a flat surface to ensure that the liquid level and the markings on the cylinder are both horizontal. 2. Position the eye at the same level as the bottom of the meniscus to avoid parallax error.
7
Measuring Volume of Liquids e.g. water, oil, acid correct reading = 38 cm 3
8
Measuring Volume of Mercury correct reading = 40 cm 3
