1. FREE VERSE POEM

2. WHAT IS A FREE VERSE POEM?  A poem that does not rhyme.  Has no rhythm.  You’re not counting syllables.  Should be poetic in nature.  Good language.  You can use punctuation however you like, but you do need a period at the end of the final line.  IF IT LOOKS LIKE A POEM, IT IS A POEM!

3. DAY 1: CREATE A FREE-VERSE POEM.  It could be about anything!  Favorite sport, team, a place you’ve been, how you feel, your morning routine, anything!  Describe! Be poetic. NO RULES!!!!  Your only criteria:  5 line minimum  35 word minimum

4. DAY 2: IMAGERY  See, taste, touch, smell, hear  PAINT A PICTURE FOR THE READER!  You must add imagery (taste, touch, smell, or hear). You can have sight in there, but it wont count for points. You need to come up with one of the other four too. If you can add it more than once, all the better!

5. DAY 3: SIMILE AND METAPHOR  Simile: comparison between two unlike objects using ‘like’ or ‘as’.  Metaphor: comparison between two unlike objects without using ‘like’ or ‘as.’  Simile: He eats like a pig.  Metaphor: He is a pig when he eats.  Simile: She was swimming like a duck in water.  Metaphor: She was a duck swimming in water.

6. SIMILE, METAPHOR, OR NEITHER?  I run like the wind.  I like frosting.  The water is very cold.  Kelly's high-pitched laugh was like a hyena's cackle.  The Statue of Liberty welcomed us to the USA.  The dense fog was like a curtain concealing the road.

8. DAY 4: PERSONIFICATION  Giving human traits (something only humans can do) to animals or objects.  Examples:  The flame whispers in the dark.  The grassy field danced with the breeze.  The teapot sang as the water boiled.  Write a personification to the following (8 words or more each):  Train  Vacuum  Pencil  Leaf

9. DAY 5: ALLITERATION  A sound device in which the beginning sound or sounds in a group of words are repeated.  When you have several (ideally 3 or more) words that start with the same sound very close together.  You can have little words like ‘is’ ‘if’ ‘a’ etc. between them.  Alliteration makes your poetry sound more interesting and catchy. Examples: She sells seashells by the seashore. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before - Edgar Allan Poe “The Raven”  Write a 5-word (5 words that all start with the same sound, not including little words in between) alliteration using:  THE FIRST LETTER OF YOUR FIRST NAME.  THE THIRD LETTER OF YOUR LAST NAME.
