4 What is a habitat? A habitat is a place where a plant or animal lives. Just like you have a home or place to live, so do animals and plants. A fish, for example, needs clean water to live. A grasshopper, however, needs a big space where it can hop and leaves that it can eat.

6 Grasslands Grasslands are large areas of grasses, flowers and herbs. In the middle of North America is a grassland called the North American Prairie. Click the pictures to learn more about it!

7 Grassland Weather Summers are warm and humid. Winters are cold but not to the extreme. The average temperature for the prairie in January is 20° F, and 70° F in July. It rains 10-30 inches a year.

8 Grassland Animals Prairie dogs live in Grasslands They have brown fur and flat tails They have round heads with large eyes and tiny ears They weigh between 1 to 3 pounds They burrow their homes in the ground for protection They eat grasses and herbs

9 Grassland Plants It grows 3 to 10 feet high They have very deep roots It needs moist soil and sun to grow This grass is called Turkey Feet because the shape of the seed

15 Rainforest Rainforests are forests that rain all the time. In South America, there is a large Rainforest called the Amazon. Click the pictures to learn more about it!

16 Rainforest Weather The rainy season is from December till May when it rains all the time and the temperature is cooler A Rainforest gets around 150 cm of rain a year The dry season is from June till November. The average temperature ranges from 85-95 degrees.

17 Rainforest Animals Red-Eye tree frogs live in Rainforests They eat insects like crickets and they also eat smaller frogs They live near water so their offspring (babies) with survive Males grow to be 2 cm Females grow to be 3-4 cm

18 Rainforest Plants More than 2/3 of the worlds plants can be found in a Rainforest The Strangler Fig is found in the Rainforest It grows from a seed left on a tree It grows its roots around a tree and takes over They provide shelter for many animals like bats and birds

25 Wetland Weather Weather in Wetlands are humid and sticky Wetlands can get as cold as 30 degrees, but they can also go up to 120 degrees! They typically receive 60 inches of rain a year.

26 Wetland Animals Alligators live in Wetlands An average adult alligator weighs 790 pounds An average alligator grows to 14 feet long

27 Wetland Plants Pickerelweed is an aquatic plant that grows three to four feet tall. The leaves are large and heart- shaped They grow in shallow water, such as wetlands The nectar attracts many insects, including bees and butterflies.

36 Desert Plants A Cactus is found in a Desert because they are able to store water inside for a long period of time. They have sharp spikes to protect themselves against predators They can grow as high as 63 feet high
