2 The Beginning of the War…. 1775 The Battle at Lexington and Concord First shots of Revolutionary War fired at Lexington and Concord Fought in April, 1775 Followed by the War at Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston Capture of Fort Ticonderoga All fought in Northern Colonies

3 THE EARLY YEARS…. Late 1775, the Revolutionary War spread to the North and the South. Patriot forces unsuccessfully invaded Canada. British invasion of Southern colonies was unsuccessful. British left Boston and focused on the middle colonies. George Washington’s Army was driven out of New York and retreated across New Jersey but was victorious in Trenton and Princeton during the winter of 1776-77.

4 The Middle Years 1777, 1778, 1779 In the summer of 1777, British were defeated in Saratoga, including battles in New York and Vermont British Victories at Brandywine Creek and Germantown Pennsylvania led to the capture of Philadelphia Continental Army spent a bitter winter at Valleyforge Pennsylvania. George Washington turned north and fought the Battle of Monmouthcourt House and stayed in NY for 3 years.

5 1979-1780 In 1779, the war shifted to the Southern Colonies. The British won control after victories in Savannah Georgia and Charleston South Carolina. In 1780-1781, local Patriot and Continental army units began striking back and won battles in both North and South Carolina.

7 Who was in the Battle of Yorktown? – General George Washington led 17,000 American (Continentals) (Blue Uniforms) and French Troops (Tan Uniforms) VERSUS – British General Lord Charles Cornwallis led a contingent of 9,000 British (Red Uniforms) and Hessian (German) Troops (Black Uniforms)

8 When did the Battle of Yorktown take place? The battle took place in Yorktown, Virginia It began on September 28, 1781 and ended on October 19, 1781 The battle strategy involved trapping the British along the James River and surrounding and overtaking the British ships and troops on the land.

9 Battle of Yorktown Lord Cornwallis’s movements as leader of the British troops were followed closely by the Continental (American and French troops) army led by George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. The French Fleet (Ships) led by Comte de Grasse blocked any escape by sea for Lord Cornwallis after de Grasse defeated a British fleet let by Sir Thomas Graves at the Battle of the Chesapeake. Continental Forces led by General George Washington assisted the naval forces to completely surround Lord Cornwallis and the British and Hession troops by land and sea.

10 The Battle of Yorktown Ends October 19, 1781 Lord Cornwallis surrenders to the French and American Troops American Independence is recognized by the British Government
